There are many things to consider when selecting an Insurance Agency or new insurance Agent. Top of the list for most people is price. As a society, we are conditioned to look at the products we consume or purchase, based on price. That’s how we assign value. However, insurance should NOT be one of those items. I would argue that if price is your main (or only) consideration when choosing an insurance agent or policy, you are putting yourself, your home, your family, and/or your business at risk.
So, what SHOULD you use as insurance selection criteria? The primary criteria should be customer service, followed closely by the coverage offered.
But how do you assess customer service? These are some questions I recommend people ask when researching agents:
- Will my agent sit with me and explain my coverage options?
- Will I get personalized advice and recommendations about things I may not have considered?
- Will my agent be available – via phone (not just an 800 number), email, and in-person when I have questions?
- Is there a local agent that lives in my community and that knows my friends and neighbors?
- Is my agent knowledgeable in the industry and fully licensed?
- Does my agent have a good reputation for being available and supporting clients with actual claims?
Ask friends and family - the people you trust - who they trust with their insurance needs. We’ve all been down the 1-800 number automated system wormhole which can be frustrating when you have a real need or question. Make sure you have a person, not a system, who can actually help.
Purchasing insurance based on price is a roll of the dice. Don’t risk it. Do your homework to find a knowledgeable expert who understands your situation, is available to talk, and can offer a wide range of coverages tailored to your needs. When you really need help, you’ll be happy you took the time upfront to find an insurance partner, not just a policy.
The choice is yours!
